I don't know what "part" you think bikers have to play, but I'm gonna stick my two cents in...Firstly, if you don't enjoy the wind in your hair and bugs in your teeth, you should think about trading your bike in for a convertible. Being a female who loves to ride, I could care less what my hair looks like at the end of the day. And yes, I do have long hair, I keep it in a braid so it doesn't get full of knots. Secondly, If you live in a state that requires helmets there is no amount of fabric between your head and your helmet that's going to keep your skid lid from stinking after a summer of riding. I do wear a bandana under my helmet sometimes, but not for any particular reason. Just because I feel like it.
References :
I'm NOT "playing the part" I wear one to keep my hair from getting all tangled. If I don't wear one, it's very hard to get the snarls from my hair. Also, you can get it wet and it will cool you down. They also help keep your helmet, if you CHOOSE to wear one, (riders should have the right to CHOOSE to wear a helmet or not.) from getting all sweaty. Keeps you from getting your scalp sunburned, too.
References :
To protect against sunburn, helmet hair, hair in the eyes and sweat in the eyes. I always wear a helmet and I wear a do-rag under my helmet to help keep the sweat from getting in the padding of my helmet.
References :
Ok folks, here's the real reasons. And while I'm sure vanity plays into it for both men and women, if you have long hair, try riding without a helmet and you'll have knots and tangles that'll hvae you reduced to tears. Just ask my sister.

Apparently the other helmetless responders don't ride much farther than the local bar because if they did, they'd know the other BIG reason. Sunburned scalp. Even if you never wear a hat when not riding, your hair prevents much of the sun from reaching your scalp. With the wind blowing your hair around, the sun has a direct shot at the top of your head and forehead. Take my word for it, a sunburned scalp and forehead is VERY uncomfortable! The only sunburn more painful was when my lips were so badly sunburned they'd crack open and bleed.
